Wooster Cruises Past Chatham, 18-5
Scots score seven in the first, seven more in the third
WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster baseball team scorched Chatham University for seven runs in the first inning and kept adding to the count in an eventual 18-5 win at Art Murray Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Junior first baseman Ryan Kramer had a day, knocking in sophomore third baseman Zack Barienbrock on a one-out double in the top of the first. Senior centerfield Leo Widtmann's single to the left side was stopped by Chatham (6-7) shortstop Ty Blackburn, but it was too far in the hole to make a play anywhere once Wooster (2-7) loaded the bases. Next, sophomore Jay Hanzie plated two Scots with a single to center field, then junior catcher Nathaniel Huxtable was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Barienbrock, one of three Scots to come to the plate twice in the first, capped the scoring with a two-run single back up the middle.
Kramer stayed hot, rocketing a two-run homer over the L.C. Boles Memorial Golf Course's clubhouse that upped the lead to 12-0 in the third. Prior to Kramer's third homer of the year, first-year shortstop David Guldin clubbed an RBI double to left center for his first collegiate hit. Guldin's double scored Hanzie, who singled earlier in the inning and stole second. Later in the inning, senior right fielder Alex Gerdenich got ahold of a pitch and roped it to the fence in right for a two-run double that capped the Scots' second seven-spot of the afternoon.
Sophomore Michael Scarpelli (2-0) turned in a strong start, setting down Chatham in order in the third and fifth innings. He recorded two of his seven strikeouts in the fifth inning. Scarpelli was efficient, working six innings and throwing 63 of 86 pitches for strikes.
Kramer finished 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. He came to the plate in the eighth inning needing a triple for his second cycle of the year. Kramer singled through the left side, knocking in Barienbrock.
Gerdenich ended the afternoon 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Barienbrock, Huxtable, and Hanzie combined to go 6-for-12 with seven runs.
Blackburn was 3-for-3 to lead Chatham. Matt Bamford (0-2) did not make it out of the first inning. He allowed seven runs on three hits and walked four.
Next, Wooster is at Allegheny (5-4) for a 3 p.m. game on Wednesday, March 12.
