Wooster Takes Down Old Conference Foe, 13-7
Gerdenich records last 11 outs in win
MEADVILLE, Pennsylvania – Senior Alex Gerdenich fired 3 2/3 innings of strong relief and The College of Wooster baseball team's offensive production provided plenty of support throughout Wednesday's 13-7 win at Allegheny College.
Wooster (3-7) broke things open with a five-run fourth inning that made it 8-1. Gerdenich, playing right field at the time, started the inning with a walk and was one three Fighting Scots to score when senior center fielder Leo Widtmann cleared the bases with a triple to right center. Sophomore third baseman Zack Barienbrock legged out Wooster's second triple of the inning, which scored Widtmann, and junior first baseman Ryan Kramer capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
Earlier, Barienbrock's two-run homer made it 3-1 in the third inning, and later, senior left fielder Nick Pett blasted a two-run homer in the sixth inning that upped Wooster's lead to 11-6.
Gerdenich (1-1) struck out three while recording the final 11 outs of the game for Wooster. He allowed a run on two hits. He entered in the sixth and retired the first two Gators (5-4) faced. Junior battery mate Nathaniel Huxtable helped Gerdenich out, throwing out Liam Irving trying to steal second in the seventh inning. Gerdenich's struck out the side in the eighth and allowed just one hit during a scoreless ninth inning.
Six Wooster starters had multiple hits in the contest, led by sophomore designated hitter Jay Hanzie's four. Barienbrock and Widtmann both finished 2-for-5 with three RBI. Wooster had five players with two runs. Pett reached base safely four times on two hits and two walks.
Junior Jack Spring started and allowed a run on two hits in three innings. Allegheny's Matt Jennings (0-1) toed the rubber for the Gators and was tagged for seven runs on seven hits in three innings.
Allegheny was led by Tyson Bryant-Dawson, who went 2-for-5 with a fifth-inning grand slam.
Next, Eureka College (2-6) visits for a doubleheader at Art Murray Field on Saturday, March 15. First pitch is at noon.
