Scots Cruise To Fourth Straight Win
Baseball handles La Roche, 13-4
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The College of Wooster baseball team secured their fourth consecutive win on Tuesday with a dominating 13-4 win at La Roche University.
The Wooster (9-10) bats were consistent, scoring in five of the nine innings as they withstood a four-run second inning that gave La Roche (3-14) their only lead at 4-3.
After a scoreless third, Wooster retook the lead with one swing of the bat as senior Nick Pett hit a two-run double to right field.
Senior Leo Widtmann hit a double of his own in the top of the fifth to score another run, while a sacrifice bunt later from first-year Aidan Krantz scored Widtmann to make it 7-4.
Wooster then expanded upon its lead with a four-run seventh inning.
Sophomore Zack Barienbrock hit a run scoring single with the bases loaded while senior Ryan Kramer did the same but scored two on a single to center. A sacrifice fly from Pett made it 11-4.
More insurance runs came in the ninth as sophomore Andrew Kerr walked in a run, and first-year Luke Rizzo hit a sacrifice fly for the 13th score.
Wooster collected 13 hits, led by a 4-for-5 performance from Kramer who also added four RBI, two doubles and two runs scored. Widtmann finished 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI, and Pett was 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Starter Michael Scarpelli got the win in 5.2 innings of work. He struck out seven while allowing three earned runs.
The bullpen was on point, not allowing a hit through the final 3.1 innings. James MacMillan was part of that, striking out five of his seven outs, while Cooper Baer pitched a clean ninth to put away the game.
Next, Wooster hosts Heidelberg University on Wednesday for one 4 p.m. game before opening conference play this weekend versus Ohio Wesleyan University.
