Scots Extend Winning Streak to Five
Baseball defeats Heidelberg 8-5, turns attention to NCAC play
The College of Wooster baseball team stayed hot, winning its fifth in a row following an 8-5 win over Heidelberg College on Wednesday.
Wooster's two through three batters contributed all six of Wooster's RBI's and all but one of the team's eight hits as senior Nick Pett led the squad with a 4-for-4 day.
Pett, Ryan Kramer and Colin Leslie each collected two RBI. Kramer went 2-for-4, and Leslie batted 1-for-3.
In the first, Kramer and Pett ignited the offense after hitting back-to-back solo home runs to right field to give Wooster an early 2-0 lead.
Wooster tacked on another run in the fifth when Pett singled home his second run scored. In the sixth, Wooster benefitted from a two-out error, scoring four unearned runs thanks to the extended inning.
This was behind an effecient pitching performance from junior Jack Spring who started the game by throwing 15 pitches before throwing his first ball.
Spring went six innings, striking out seven and allowing just one unearned run, leaving with the Scots ahead 7-1 after six innings. Spring collected the win, his first of the year.
The first in relief, Patrick Wiggins, was lifted after walking his two batters faced. However, sophomore Constantine Vernadakis got the Scots out of the initial jam with a double play at second base.
Yet, he was burned by an infield error, which helped bring across three runs in the inning as Heidelberg inched closer at 7-4.
The Scots made it 8-4 in the seventh when Leo Widtmann scored on a throwing error from the catcher. Heidelberg scored once more in the ninth off a home run from Braedy Limke. Senior Thomas Gfell pitched a scoreless eighth, while classmate Alex Gerdenich pitched the ninth with the only blemish on his line being the home run.
Henry Mates took the loss for Heidelberg, allowing three runs in five innings of work.
Heidelberg collected nine hits, led by a 3-for-5 performance from Limke.
With the win, Wooster moves to .500 at 10-10. Heidelberg drops to 9-11.
Next, Wooster will open North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday with a doubleheader against Ohio Wesleyan University.
