Kevin
Friedman (Pepper Pike, Ohio / St. Peter Chanel) and Storm
Tropea (Hollywood, Fla. / Hollywood Hills) of The College of
Wooster were selected to the All-North Region Team, both receiving
second-team accolades from D3football.com on Wednesday.
Friedman, a senior who previously picked up first-team all-North
Coast Athletic Conference honors, was one of the top punters across
NCAA Div. III again. His average of 41.1 yards not only led the
league, but ranks seventh in the nation and was the fourth-best in
school history. Friedman punted 39 times, with seven landing inside
the 20-yard line and three being fair caught, as he helped Wooster
top the NCAC in net average (35.3 yards) as well. Friedman, who
also served as the team's kickoff specialist, boomed five 50-yard
punts, including a career-long 65-yarder, and completed a 28-yard
pass play during a fake punt.
A three-year member of the Fighting Scots, Friedman, who
transferred following one season at NCAA Div. I-AA non-scholarship
Robert Morris University, finished with the conference's career
record for punting average at 39.7 yards. The former mark was also
held by a Wooster player, Matt Mahaffey (39.1 yards from
1996-99).
Tropea served as the Scots' left guard, anchoring an offensive
line that cleared the way for the offense to average 389.3 yards
per game – second-best in the NCAC and 49th of 235 Div. III
teams. Statistically, the 6-0, 265-pound Tropea graded out a
team-best 77 percent and was credited with 63 knockdown blocks,
according to the coaching staff. As a unit, Wooster recorded 5.1
yards per rushing attempt and only yielded eight sacks all season,
both conference bests.
A total of 75 players were chosen for this year's All-North Region
Team, which is voted on by D3football.com staff and various sports
information directors in the 58-school district, which includes
most in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio and parts of
Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
