Fighting Scots Roll Over Terriers 62-0

Robert Flagg WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster rolled up a season-high 563 yards of total offense en route to the seventh-highest scoring output in school history and its defense posted a shutout for the first time since Oct. 14, 2006, as the Fighting Scots put forth a dominating effort that added up to a 62-0 victory over North Coast Athletic Conference foe Hiram College Saturday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.

The 62 points included eight rushing touchdowns, tying a school record which last occurred at Kenyon College on Oct. 9, 2004, and the shutout marked the team's first in 42 games.

Wooster (4-4, 3-1 NCAC) set the tone right away, as following a touchback on a punt, the offense moved 80 yards in just four plays. Zack Weidrick made a diving catch over the middle for 30 yards on the Scots' initial snap from scrimmage and later Richard Barnes found Jordan McIntyre for 28 yards, setting up a five-yard touchdown run by Robert Flagg.

Later in the quarter, Girard Ogletree-Crawford notched his third interception of the season and Wooster turned it into a six-play, 45-yard touchdown drive, capped by another Flagg touchdown rush, this time from six yards away.

The Scots scored on all three of their possessions of the second period. First, they converted a 4th-and-5 as part of a 10-play, 58-yard scoring series that was capped by Barnes keeping it himself on a six-yard touchdown run.

After a three-and-out by the defense, Wooster was in the end zone six plays later. A 50-yard pass down the middle from Barnes to Kyle Murdock led to a three-yard rushing touchdown for Flagg.

The Scots worked on their two-minute offense late in the half, quickly moving 83 yards in seven plays and just 1:24. Joe Stoffer started it with a nice diving catch for 19 yards, and later, Barnes found Weidrick open down the right sideline for 34 yards, which was followed by Flagg's fourth rushing score of the half as he went two yards up the middle for a 34-0 lead.

Wooster scored on the initial possession of the second half, making it four-straight possessions to end in touchdowns. Barnes completed the 51-yard march via a running score from three yards out.

The Scots extended the lead to 48-0 towards the end of the third quarter on a drive that featured four of the nine plays going to Mike Redick through the air, including the final three. He combined for 44 of the 66 yards during the possession, including a one-yard touchdown in the right flat.

In the fourth quarter, Wooster tacked on two more scores, a six-yard touchdown rush by freshman Jimmy Tomcufcik, marking the first of his career, and a one-yard run by second-string quarterback Brett Frongillo, coming one play after Seth Goodwin had blocked a punt.

Most of the Scots' rushing touchdowns were set up by the passing game, as Barnes completed 20-of-31 for 320 yards, marking the 11th-most in school history. Redick was his favorite target again, as he hauled in 12 receptions for 134 yards – both career highs. In fact, the 12 receptions tied for the second-most in Wooster annals.

In addition to his career-high four touchdowns, Flagg notched his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season, finishing with 108 on 17 carries.

The Scots' defense, which included 1.5 sacks by Chris Aukerman, held Hiram (1-7, 1-3 NCAC) to 39 rushing yards and 3-of-17 on 3rd-down conversions.

Next Saturday, Wooster, which moved into third-place in the conference standings, welcomes Kenyon College (0-8, 0-4 NCAC) to Papp Stadium for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
