WOOSTER, Ohio – Daniel Vasil kicked a 31-yard field goal in overtime to give Case Western Reserve University a 24-21 victory over The College of Wooster in the northeast Ohio rivals' annual Baird Brothers Trophy game Saturday at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster (2-5) had the first possession of overtime and appeared on its way to a touchdown. After converting a 4th-and-1 that saw Cameron Daniels haul in a 14-yard jump pass from Brett Frongillo at the two-yard line, Frongillo appeared on his way to a rushing score, but as he was reaching the ball across the goal line, Wade Self of Case Western Reserve (6-1) forced a fumble and it was recovered by teammate Jordan Banky in the end zone.

On the Spartans' second play of their overtime possession, they induced a defensive pass interference for a first down. Two of the next three plays went for losses, followed by a false start, moving the field goal back from 26 to 31 yards, but Vasil booted it through anyways for the win.

Early on, the Fighting Scots claimed leads of 7-0 and 14-7. On their second series of the afternoon, Frongillo found Daniels open on the left side of the end zone for a 13-yard touchdown, capping a 10-play, 59-yard drive, in which they converted three third downs.

Wooster got the ball back when Case Western Reserve, on 4th-and-12, threw a desperation pass into the end zone where Brandon James made an interception. On the very next play, though, the Scots returned the favor with a pick that was returned 25 yards for a touchdown by Jacob Adams to even the score at seven.

Undaunted, Wooster responded with a 12-play, 60-yard touchdown march, capped by Frongillo sneaking it in on 4th-and-goal inside the one-yard line. That ended up being all of the scoring during a first half, which was highlighted by the Scots defense recording six sacks, including 2.0 apiece by Quinn Hood and Chris Moore.

The Spartans scored a pair of touchdowns during the third quarter. On the half's first possession, they went 70 yards in 14 plays, converting a 4th-and-6 and a 3rd-and-12 along the way. On the latter, Erik Olson hit Sean Lapcevic for 22 yards down to the five-yard line, and the very next play, Olson took it himself up the middle for a five-yard score, tying the game for a second time.

After a three-and-out, Case Western Reserve took advantage of a series of Wooster penalties en route to the end zone. During the 10-play, 72-yard drive, the Scots shot themselves in the foot with four penalties, all resulting in first downs, and the Spartans eventually scored on an Olson-to-Steven Magister three-yard touchdown pass for their first lead (21-14).

Wooster would tie it up just before the midway point of the fourth quarter. On 3rd-and-3 from the 23, Frongillo faked the defense, and most of the crowd at Papp Stadium, as he kept the ball, and while most of the defenders followed running back Robert Flagg to the left, the quarterback went 23 yards for the touchdown.

Both teams had field goal chances in the final minutes, with Case Western Reserve misfiring on a 37-yarder at the 1:09 mark and then the Scots missing a 43-yarder with :20 left in regulation.

It was the first overtime game for Wooster since Nov. 6, 2004, when it beat Wittenberg University 64-58 en route to the North Coast Athletic Conference championship that year.

On Saturday, the Scots outgained the Spartans by a healthy 344-198 margin, but were hurt by the two turnovers and seven penalties for 77 yards.

Frongillo completed 17-of-27 passes for 195 yards, with four going to Jordan McIntyre for 68 yards. Frongillo was also effective on the ground with 56 yards and the two scores, while Flagg netted a season-high 87 yards on 23 rushes.

Olson was 20-of-31 through the air for 161 yards, while Kenny Riordan led Case Western Reserve's rushing attack with 47 yards on 18 carries.

Wooster returns to NCAC play next Saturday night with a visit to Hiram College (1-6, 1-2 NCAC).
