Hissong, Renteria to Play in Upcoming Bowl Games

Mateo Renteria, Cole Hissong, Wooster football Cole Hissong and Mateo Renteria, who recently completed record-setting careers at The College of Wooster, are taking part in all-star bowl games. The standout Fighting Scots are set to play in the All-American Bowl at US Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings, on December 30. Additionally, Hissong will play in the Podyum College All-Star Bowl at Abel Holtz Stadium in Florida on January 8.

Hissong earned second-team All-America honors from D3football.com and the Associated Press following the 2021 season and was a three-time D3football.com Preseason All-American. The three-time D3football.com All-Region and All-North Coast Athletic Conference honoree graduated as the program's all-time leader in receptions (145), receiving yards (2,020), and touchdowns (18) by a tight end, with the totals ranking third, fifth, and sixth overall in program history. This fall, Hissong led Wooster with 52 receptions and was second on the team with 593 yards and three touchdowns. He caught the go-ahead touchdown with :11 remaining in Wooster's 44-43 win over Wittenberg University, a game in which the Scots overcame a 33-7 third-quarter deficit to beat the Tigers for the first time since 2008. Following that performance, Hissong set a D3football.com Team of the Week record with his fifth selection as a tight end.

Renteria, a two-time All-NCAC quarterback and four-time NCAC Athlete of the Week, finished his career as the program's all-time leader in total offense (10,614 yards), passing completions (770), passing attempts (1,270), passing yards (10,083), and passing touchdowns (78). He also ranks second all-time at Wooster in total plays (1,575), average yards per play (6.7), 300-yard games (11), completion percentage (60.6), and passing efficiency points (143.34). This fall, Renteria completed 174-of-301 passes for 2,233 yards and 18 touchdowns. He added a co-team-leading seven rushing touchdowns and finished the year with 159 yards on 68 carries. Renteria became the first quarterback in program history with four 2,000-yard passing seasons and was one of three NCAA Div. III signal-callers who played this year to eclipse 10,000 career passing yards. In 2021, Renteria broke the program's single-game records for total offense (550 yards), passing yards (503), completions (38), and passing touchdowns (6) during a 59-41 win over Allegheny College.
