Renteria Signs Professional Contract with French Team

Mateo Renteria, Wooster football Mateo Renteria, The College of Wooster football team's record-setting quarterback from 2018-22, recently signed a professional contract with Les Cougars de Saint-Ouen-L'Aumône, a professional team in France.

The two-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference selection holds Wooster's career records for total offense (10,614 yards), passing completions (770), passing attempts (1,270), passing yards (10,083), and passing touchdowns (78). He ranks second at Wooster in total plays (1,575), average yards per play (6.7), 300-yard games (11), completion percentage (60.6), and passing efficiency points (143.34).

As a senior, Renteria completed 174-of-301 passes for 2,233 yards and 18 touchdowns. He rushed for a co-team-leading seven touchdowns and finished the year with 159 yards on 68 carries. He became the first Wooster quarterback with four 2,000-yard passing seasons and was one of three active players in Div. III in 2022 with over 10,000 career passing yards. The four-time NCAC Athlete of the Week earned his first 2022 honor after completing 27-of-43 passes for 396 yards and three touchdowns against Hiram College. His other top game came against Kenyon College, an afternoon in which the environmental studies alumnus tallied 464 yards of total offense and six touchdowns.

Renteria threw for a school-record 3,237 yards in 2021, a season in which he completed 223-of-353 passes. His 29 passing touchdowns that year are the second-most in program history, and for the year, Wooster boasted Div. III's seventh-ranked passing offense. He ranked fifth individually in Div. III in passing yards per game (323.7), 11th in total yards, 17th in passing touchdowns, and 24th in points responsible for (198). The NCAC's only 3,000-yard passer in 2021 earned two D3football.com Team of the Week awards and was one of two repeat NCAC Athlete of the Week selections.

Earlier in his career, Renteria took over against Ohio Wesleyan University as a first-year and went on to start the final seven games of the 2018 season. He finished fourth among first-year Div. III quarterbacks with 2,130 yards. Renteria went 29-of-45 for 388 yards and two touchdowns in his first collegiate start against DePauw University, with the yardage at the time ranking as the eighth-most in single-game program history. As a first-year, Renteria logged the fourth-most single-season yards despite not starting in three of the team's 10 games. As a sophomore, the first-team All-NCAC honoree completed 202-of-333 passes for 2,483 yards. He led the NCAC in passing yards in 2019 and tied for second in touchdowns with 17.
