Senior Day this Saturday

The College of Wooster football team (3-5, 2-4 North Coast Athletic Conference) hosts Oberlin College (1-7, 0-6 NCAC) this Saturday at 1 p.m. in its final home game of the year. Prior to the game, Wooster will honor its senior class consisting of wide receiver Cristian Amesbury (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland), linebacker Andrew Armile (Youngstown, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney), tight end Sebestyen Balassy (Medina, Ohio/St. Ignatius), placekicker Lake Barrett (Columbia, S.C./Hammond School), defensive lineman Neil Clayton (Boydton, Va./Bluestone), defensive lineman Domenic DeMuth (Mayfield Village, Ohio/Mayfield), defensive back Paul Thomas Fischer (King, N.C./South Stokes), defensive lineman Ben Greenwood (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon), offensive lineman Bryce Kamphues (North Manchester, Ind./Manchester), offensive lineman Roman LaBrosse (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy), linebacker Kobe Nadu (Summerville, Ga./Darlington School), offensive lineman Ryan Tompkins (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville), and defensive back Langston Williams (New York, N.Y./Xavier). Wooster is coming off a 47-14 win over Hiram College (1-8, 1-6 NCAC) and is looking to finish the year 4-1 at home. Oberlin lost 50-7 to Ohio Wesleyan University (5-3, 4-2 NCAC) last Saturday and is looking to snap a 16-game conference losing streak.

All-Time Series: Wooster leads the all-time series 73-23-2 and has won six straight. Wooster has beaten Oberlin more than any other opponent in program history, and the Scots have played the Yeomen more times than any other team. Kenyon College is No. 2 all-time on Wooster's wins list at 57, while Denison is second for most meetings in program history at 91. The Wooster-Oberlin series dates back to 1903. The Yeomen won that game 30-0. Wooster is 30-4 in the series since the NCAC was founded.

Last Meeting in Series: A relentless defensive effort enabled Wooster to double its season interception total, and the Scots recorded five takeaways and five sacks in a 56-13 win that concluded the 2022 season. With the win, Wooster finished with a record above .500 for the third consecutive season, while the Scots' 56 points are the most in a season finale since dropping that many on Oberlin in 1967. DeMuth ran through Oberlin's offensive line the entire first half and finished with a career-high three sacks. Two of the sacks came on consecutive third-down plays  on second-quarter drives. In the game, Wooster scored two touchdowns within nine seconds in the first quarter. Fifth-year senior Mateo Renteria surpassed 10,000 career passing yards in the win.

Offense Notes: Wooster exceeded 300 yards rushing for the second time this season in last Saturday's win over Hiram. Wooster's last time with 300 yards rushing prior to this season was a 300-yard afternoon versus Kenyon on October 29, 2016, while you have to go back to a 42-21 double-up win over Allegheny College on October 11, 2014 to find Wooster's second most-recent 300-yard rushing game prior to this fall. Wooster's last time with two 300-yard rushing games came in 2014, as Wooster ran all over Oberlin to the tune of 302 yards rushing and a 5.7 per-rush average in a 63-10 rout on September 20 of that year.

Defense Notes: Sophomore Tate Journell (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) leads the team with three interceptions, and that marks the most since alumnus Beau Greenwood had three in 2019. Should Journell log another interception, it would mark the most by a Scot in a season since alumni Tyson Vogel and All-American Brandon James had five apiece in 2013. Journell is second in the league in interceptions this fall. Sophomore Brock Sivon (Perry, Ohio/Perry) leads the team with 56 tackles on the year, while junior Jon Banal (Columbus Grove, Ohio/Columbus Grove) continues to lead the way with nine tackles for loss.

Special Teams Notes: Barrett's next field goal will tie the fifth-year senior with Richie McNally for the most in program history at 27. Barrett is a perfect 41-for-41 on the year on kicks, with 36 extra-point makes and five field goals. Barrett is now fifth all-time in program history with 226 points, and will likely remain there, as Brian Grandison is fourth on the list at 270 points. Barrett joined McNally in last Saturday's win as the only placekickers in program history to make at least 35 extra points in three different seasons.
