All-Time Series: Saturday marks the fourth all-time meeting between Wooster and Wilmington. Wooster won the first meeting in the series, 30-20, on November 7, 1992, while Wilmington took a 41-19 game in Wooster the following year, which marked the Scots' season finale. Wooster's last win over an OAC school came on September 2, 2006, when the Scots beat John Carroll University 30-22.
Last Meeting: Big plays were Wooster's calling card in the 2023 season opener, but Wilmington won 63-43 on September 2. Wooster scored twice from 88 yards out in the fourth quarter. Then first-year Kieran Klingsberg delivered excitement in his collegiate debut with an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Later, then-sophomore Chanden Lee (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) hit then-junior Brazos Gadler (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) in stride for another 88-yard touchdown. Lee completed 20-of-30 passes for 329 yards and four touchdowns in his first collegiate start. Gadler turned four receptions into 146 yards and a touchdown. Then-sophomore Braydon Hudson (North Liberty, Ind./Washington) led the defense with 10 tackles.
The Wooster-Wilmington Connection: E. Blake Moore Jr., a proud, dedicated 1980 alumnus and two-time All-American at Wooster, signed a professional contract with the Cincinnati Bengals in 1980 and played six seasons in the NFL, four of which were with Cincinnati. At the time, Cincinnati utilized Wilmington College, including Williams Stadium, as its training camp site. While with the Bengals, Moore played in Super Bowl XVI. Moore's singular determination carried over to all aspects of his Wooster experience. Academically, the history alumnus was the sixth three-time first-team College Sports Communicators' Academic All-American and the second to earn three first-team laurels from a NCAA Div. III institution. After concluding his professional career with the Green Bay Packers, Moore graduated cum laude from Harvard University Law School and has enjoyed a distinguished career in asset management, serving as a senior executive with Mackenzie Financial Corporation, UBS Asset Management, and Foresters Financial. At present, the emeritus Wooster Board of Trustees member is CEO and President of Touchstone Investments.
Offense Notes: All 11 starters from 2023 are back this fall for Wooster. Wooster's offensive line consisting of seniors Tyler Ellsworth (Ravenna, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary), Jacob Johnston (Adrian, Mich./Adrian), Bryce Kamphues (North Manchester, Ind./Manchester), Logan Pugh (Youngstown, Ohio/Jackson-Milton), and Seth Robinson (Mesquite, Texas/Mesquite) have a combined 11 years of starting experience between them. Lee enters year two as the starting quarterback, while seniors Gadler and Carter Warstler (New Albany, Ohio/Columbus Academy) give the Scots two dynamic and electric receiving threats on the outside. Senior Sebestyen Balassy (Medina, Ohio/St. Ignatius) enters year two as the starting tight end, which is one of the Scots' top producing positions in recent years, with standouts Jacob Lewis and Cole Hissong earning all-region and All-America awards respective, from the position over the last six seasons.
Defense Notes: Wooster was among the NCAC leaders in takeaways last year, posting top-three conference rankings in fumbles recovered and interceptions. Two-way standout junior Tate Journell (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) led the team with four interceptions, which marked the most by an individual Scot since the 2013 season when alumni Brandon James and Tyson Vogel had five each. Alumnus Paul Thomas Fischer was Wooster's leader last year with two fumble recoveries.
Special Teams Notes: Balassy steps into the starting placekicker role following the graduation of Lake Barrett, who was named the NCAC Don Hunsinger Award winner, which is the NCAC's Male Student-Athlete of the Year honor. Barrett is Wooster's first NCAC Don Hunsinger or Pam Smith Award winner and will be recognized at halftime of the October 5 game against Wabash College. Gadler and Warstler, who both earned All-NCAC honors as a returner in the past, project to form a dynamic duo for Wooster's return game.
