Behind goals from three different players and a trio of assists by junior Amanda Artman, The College of Wooster field hockey team defeated Kenyon College 5-2.
WOOSTER, Ohio - Behind goals from three different players and a
trio of assists by junior Amanda Artman,
The College of Wooster field hockey team defeated Kenyon College
5-2 Sunday on Cindy Barr Memorial Field. The Scots raced out to a
5-0 lead, and improved to 14-5 overall and 11-1 in the NCAC, while
Kenyon dipped to 9-11 and 8-4 in league action.
Sunday's contest was originally slated for Saturday, Sept. 13, but
after playing for 4:47 that rainy day and the score tied 0-0, the
officials postponed it due to unplayable field conditions.
With 30:13 put on the first-half clock, action in the opening half
was fast and furious. Wooster got on the board first just with
29:07 showing when Eileen Barrer
scored her first of two goals on the afternoon off an assist from
Artman, who raced up the left side and sent a nifty pass to the
stick of Barrer. Sophomore Nina Dine put the
hosts up by a 2-0 score when she converted a penalty corner
opportunity with 22:23 remaining in the opening stanza for her
third goal of the season.
After halftime, the Scots' offense would explode, scoring three
times in a span that covered 6:52. Once again, Artman and Barrer
connected when Artman again utilized her speed and sent a pass to
the stick of Barrer, who knocked it past Kenyon goalkeeper Karen
Thompson 8:14 into the second. Just :45 later, Dine was the
recipient of a pass out of a penalty corner, as she dribbled to her
left and laced a shot that found the back of the cage for a 4-0
Wooster advantage. Just over six minutes later, sophomore Briana Lynch
got into the scoring column and capped off the scoring for Wooster
via Artman's third helper of the afternoon.
Goals by the Ladies' Sophia Daly with 6:06 left and Holly Bacon
with 2:31 remaining broke up the Wooster shutout, as Wooster's
defensive unit was strong throughout the match.
In goal, freshman Madalyn Myers
had a big game, posting 10 saves in 63:54 of action allowing just
one goal, while junior Izzy
Maffetone allowed one score in 6:06 with three saves. On the
other end of the field, Thompson was credited with four saves.
Additionally, Artman's three-assist game ties a career-high that
she duplicated when she handing out three helpers back on Oct. 7,
2006, in a 5-0 win over Wittenberg University.
Wooster, the conference regular-season champions and No. 1 seed in
the upcoming NCAC Tournament, will play host to No. 4 seed
Wittenberg at Cindy Barr Memorial Field on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The
winner of that game will play the winner of the other semifinal,
which pits No. 2 seed Ohio Wesleyan University playing host to No.
3 seed Kenyon.
