Scots Shutout Earlham 5-0 for Ninth NCAC Win

The College of Wooster's field hockey team claimed its ninth North Coast Athletic Conference victory of the 2008 season with a 5-0 shutout of Earlham College on Saturday afternoon. The Scots improve their record to 12-5 overall and 9-1 in NCAC action, while Earlham dips to 6-9 and 3-7 in the NCAC.

Wooster's offense dominated play from the outset, out-shooting the Quakers 26-1 on the day. The Scots claimed the early lead when sophomore Eileen Barrer registered her 11th goal of the season 3:26 into the game. Wooster added two more goals before the end of the first half, as Amanda Artman tallied her first of two with 19:24 left on an assist from Barrer, and sophomore Briana Lynch knocked in her 12th score of the fall just under 10 minutes later.

The Scots turned the offense up a notch in the second half, attacking Earlham's goal for 15 shots and 10 penalty corners. Arnold continued her strong play, recording her second of the day and team-leading 22nd goal of the season on a pass from sophomore Stephanie Standera during a penalty corner. Standera's helper was her eighth of the campaign. Junior Brittany Montgomery capped off the Wooster scoring with 16:57 left on her fourth tally of the season.

The combination of freshman goalkeeper Madalyn Myers, who played the first 53:08, and sophomore Abby Peters, who tallied 16:52 of playing time, were rarely tested on the day, facing just one shot and not having to make a save as the Scots' defensive unit posted its sixth shutout this season.

The Scots have nearly a week off before they are next in action Friday, when they travel to Ohio Wesleyan University (12-4, 9-1 NCAC) for a key NCAC match up is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. The Scots handed the Battling Bishops their only conference loss by a 4-0 count back on Oct. 7 at Cindy Barr Memorial Field.
