WOOSTER, Ohio - The College of Wooster won for the second time
in as many contests and moved its season record to 2-0 for the
first time since 2004, blanking visiting Centre College by a 2-0
score Sunday morning at Cindy Barr Field. The victory marks the
Fighting Scots' first shutout this season, and avenges a 2-0
setback last year to the Colonels in Kentucky.
For the second consecutive game, sophomore forward Eileen Barrer
found the back of the cage putting Wooster ahead 1-0. Barrer scored
an unassisted tally breaking down the right side of the field with
3:25 left in the opening half for her second score of the season
and 15th of her career. The rest of the half, neither team found
the net, as each side managed just four shots, and the hosts took a
1-0 advantage into halftime.
The second half played out nearly the same as the first, with
neither side having many opportunities to score. With 21:42
remaining in the contest, freshman Elizabeth
Dwyer doubled Wooster's advantage on the scoreboard, notching
her first collegiate goal off a pass from sophomore Briana Lynch on
a scramble in front of the Centre cage.
For the game, Wooster out-shot the Colonels by a 10-6 margin,
limiting the visitors to just two shots in the second half, but
Centre (1-1) possessed a 13-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Defensively, Wooster junior Izzy
Maffetone picked up her first shutout of the season and third
of her career, recording seven saves in the effort. Centre
goalkeeper Patty Cowley wound up with five stops for the
Colonels.
The Scots return to action and hit the road for the first time
this season next weekend when they travel to New York and play
Ithaca College Saturday at 1 p.m., and then square off with the
University of Rochester on Sunday also at 1 p.m.
