First-Place Scots Too Much for Oberlin in 5-0 Victory

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster turned early scoring spurts at the beginning of each half into a comfortable 5-0 win over visiting Oberlin College Thursday afternoon, as the Fighting Scots began the second half of their North Coast Athletic Conference field hockey schedule.

Wooster (10-3, 7-0 NCAC), currently atop the NCAC standings, had doubled-up Oberlin (1-13, 0-9 NCAC) by a 6-3 count exactly one month prior and set the tone Thursday by scoring three times within the opening 15 minutes. Elizabeth Dwyer got things started 6:47 into the action, emerging from a scramble in front of the cage with an unassisted goal.

About five minutes later, Eileen Barrer and Amanda Artman combined for a breakaway goal. Barrer gained possession just past the midfield stripe, beat the only defender ahead of her, and eventually sent it left to Artman, who converted the opportunity for her 17th goal this season.

It was only another three minutes before the Scots lit up the scoreboard again, this time when Brittany Montgomery neatly backhanded the ball into the cage, giving Wooster three goals during a 7:29 period. There was still 20:44 on the clock, but that would be all of the scoring for the first half.

In the second, the Scots notched two more tallies over the opening 3:16. First, Artman was part of another breakaway, this time she blew past her defender and crossed the ball to Dwyer, marking the freshman's fifth goal. A mere 46 seconds had passed when Barrer scored unassisted from the right for a five-goal cushion.

The remainder of the game was highlighted by the Wooster defense, as it fended off a series of Oberlin penalty corner opportunities – 11 in the second half alone – as well as a penalty stroke. Freshman 'keeper Madalyn Myers came up with a stop on the stroke attempt, which occurred midway through the second, one of seven saves for her during the shutout.

The Scots will be on the road this weekend with games at Wittenberg University (7-5, 4-4 NCAC) Saturday and at DePauw University (7-2) on Sunday.
