WOOSTER, Ohio – Amanda Artman
lit up the cage twice and assisted on two other goals in the first
half, leading The College of Wooster past North Coast Athletic
Conference rival Wittenberg University 5-2 Saturday at Cindy Barr
Memorial Field. The six-point performance gives Artman 31 points on
12 goals and seven assists through seven contests this fall. This
marked the third time in the last four games in which Artman has
recorded a multi-goal game for the Scots.
Artman began her scoring barrage just over seven minutes into the
first half, converting on a scramble in front of the net, giving
the Scots (6-2, 4-0 NCAC) a 1-0 lead. Just over six minutes later,
Artman took a Stephanie
Standera pass and tapped it past the Tigers' (3-4, 1-3 NCAC)
'keeper to put Wooster up 2-0.
Wooster rattled the cage in the late stages of the opening stanza
just :49 seconds apart, as Artman fed a pass into Elizabeth
Dwyer at the 2:39 mark in the period for a 3-0 Wooster
advantage. Artman capped her offensive outburst on her second
helper of the afternoon to Briana Lynch
for the first of her two goals with 1:50 remaining, giving the
Scots a four-goal cushion at the half.
The second half momentum swung in favor of Wittenberg at the
start, with Tori Casanta scoring twice via a pair of Boo Vernon
assists, cutting the Wooster lead in half, 4-2, with 25:27 left in
the contest.
Wooster's defense stemmed the tide, and the offense added a final
goal by Lynch, who was the recipient of a nifty pass through
defenders by Eileen Barrer
for the final 5-2 count.
Statistically, the shots were even at 13-13, but Wittenberg held a
13-8 edge in penalty corners, including 10 in the second
stanza.
Defensively, goalie Madalyn Myers
stopped five Tiger shots in picking up her fourth win of the
season. Wittenberg goalkeeper Liana Began recorded four first-half
saves, while Jenny Schaafsma tallied one second-period stop.
Also of significance, Artman's six-point afternoon moves her into
sixth-place on Wooster's all-time scoring list, now with 84 points
(32 goals, 20 assists). Those 32 goals are the eighth-best mark in
Scot career history, while her 20 helpers are tied for seventh.
The Scots will return to action Wednesday, Oct. 1, when they
travel to Washington & Jefferson College for a 7 p.m.
non-conference bout.
