Scots Remain Perfect in NCAC, Best Denison 2-0

The College of Wooster field hockey stayed perfect in the North Coast Athletic Conference Wednesday afternoon, beating league foe Denison University behind a pair of second-half goals. With their 2-0 win, the Scots improved their overall record to 5-2 and an unblemished 3-0 NCAC mark, while the Big Red slip to 2-6 and 2-2 in the conference.

Wooster dominated the first half offensively, firing off seven shots to the hosts two, and took three more penalty corners (6-3). But after 35 minutes of play, the score remained deadlocked at zero.

In the second half, Denison mustered six looks at the goal to five for the Scots, but Wooster freshman goalkeeper Madalyn Myers made three of her four total saves during the second half to preserve her first collegiate shutout.

Wooster, meanwhile, found the offensive touch in the second stanza, and capitalized on its opportunities. With 22:30 left, sophomore Stephanie Standera slapped in an unassisted goal, which proved to be the eventual game-winner from just over five yards out. Not done yet, junior Amanda Artman added some insurance with just less than 11 minutes showing on the clock, working behind the Big Red defensive unit, and scoring on an assist by freshman Elizabeth Dwyer on a transition goal, slipping it past Denison goalkeeper Kristie Hart. For the contest, Hart was credited with eight saves.

Standera's goal was her first of the season, while Artman's tally was her team-best 10th of the fall. Also of note, Standera was credited with her first defensive save this season, aiding the Scots' defense in its second blanking of the opposition this fall.

Wooster continues play this week against conference rival Wittenberg University (3-3, 1-2 NCAC) on Saturday at 1 p.m. on Cindy Barr Field.
