Artman Leads Scots Past Kenyon 4-3 in Season, Conference Opener

Keyed by a two-goal, one-assist outing from Amanda Artman, The College of Wooster field hockey team opened the 2009 season on a positive note as the Fighting Scots earned a 4-3 road victory over league rival Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. It marked a rematch of last year's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament championship game, also a Wooster win.

On Tuesday, the Scots (1-0, 1-0 NCAC) struck first when Artman fed Maddie Hart for the sophomore's first career goal about 10 minutes into the action. Nine minutes later, Artman hit the back of the cage on an unassisted tally. Kenyon (0-1, 0-1 NCAC) would cut the 2-0 deficit in half with a goal before halftime.

The difference in the game came during the first 10 minutes of the second half as Wooster scored twice, constructing a three-goal cushion. Just 91 seconds into the stanza, Artman connected on her second unassisted goal and Eileen Barrer punched one in herself a little more than eight minutes later.

The home-standing Ladies would rally with back-to-back scores, closing within one at the 15:28 mark, but following a timeout, the Scots' defense buckled down. They held Kenyon to just one shot the rest of the way.

With the five-point game, Artman becomes Wooster's second all-time leading scorer (129 points), breaking a tie she had been in with Katie Ewig (124 points, 1993-96), and also of note, Madalyn Myers recorded four saves in goal to help preserve the win.

The Scots being non-league play this weekend with a two-game swing in Lexington, Ky.
