Scots Off to First 6-0 Start Since 1984 After Beating OWU 4-2

WOOSTER, Ohio – Freshman Laura German scored twice over a 4:19 stretch late in the second half Wednesday afternoon, lifting The College of Wooster to a 4-2 triumph over Ohio Wesleyan University in a North Coast Athletic Conference field hockey contest at sunny Cindy Barr Memorial Field.

With its sixth win in a row, Wooster (6-0, 4-0 NCAC) is now off to its best start since the 1984 season when the Fighting Scots began 11-0.

Wednesday's game was tied fairly deep into the second half before Ohio Wesleyan (3-3, 2-1 NCAC) was unable to clear on its own end and the ball slipped through to an unguarded German, who converted the scoring chance from the left side of the cage with 13:50 remaining.

About four minutes later, Wooster made another run into the box, and this time, German, near the right end line, fired an attempt on goal, which bounded off a defender's stick and past the 'keeper for the two-goal cushion at the 9:29 mark. They were the third and fourth scores of the season for German.

The remainder of the game's scoring all came during a 7:31 time period of the opening half. The Battling Bishops lit up the board first on a well-placed pass from Jen Doud to Lilly Jianas, only to see the Scots answer moments later when Kate Valora's shot from the right wing during a penalty corner found its way through the backfield and into the cage.

Ohio Wesleyan went back up by one on a Christa Cocumelli unassisted goal, and Wooster again tied it quickly as Eileen Barrer knocked in a rebound off of her own initial shot.

Overall, the Scots' defense, highlighted by senior back Katrina Wojcicchowski's two defensive saves, limited the Bishops to just seven shots.

Wooster looks to continue its winning ways this Saturday when rival Wittenberg University (2-1, 1-1 NCAC) pays its annual visit. The game will be played on the Scots' new Sprinturf surface at John P. Papp Stadium, a "first" for the field hockey program.
