German Scores Game-Winning Goal in Wooster's 5-4 Comeback Victory Over Denison

WOOSTER, Ohio – Trailing by two in the second half, The College of Wooster field hockey team scored three unanswered goals, highlighted by Laura German's game-winning blast that propelled the Fighting Scots to a 5-4 comeback win over visiting Denison University in a North Coast Athletic Conference thriller at Cindy Barr Field on Wednesday.

The Scots (13-5, 9-2 NCAC) found themselves down 4-2 with just under 30 minutes remaining in the game, when Amanda Artman scored her second goal of the afternoon on an assist from Eileen Barrer that drew Wooster within one. About seven minutes later, freshman Clare Nelson-Johnson rattled in her second career goal to knot the game 4-4, and then it was German who beat the goalkeeper at the 61:22 mark to complete the Wooster rally.

Stephanie Standera scored on a penalty corner early in the first half, and Artman later tied the game 2-2 on a backhanded goal, but Denison's Catie Merrick scored her third goal of the game with 27 seconds on the clock to put the Big Red (9-7, 5-5 NCAC) ahead 3-2 heading into the break. Denison out shot Wooster 13-6 in the first half, but the Scots took 11 more shots (17-6) then their opponent over the final 35 minutes, including the three critical scores.

In goal, Madalyn Myers tallied seven saves, and her counterpart, Brittany Benson, stopped 14 shots, including ten during the Scots' offensive onslaught in the second half. Artman scored her 74th and 75th career goals, and Denison's, Merrick, scored all four of her team's goals in the setback.

Wooster will have a week to prepare for its final game of the season, a conference clash with Kenyon College (6-11, 4-5 NCAC) at John P. Papp Stadium next Saturday at noon.
