Artman Ties NCAC Scoring Record in 4-3 Win Over Ohio Wesleyan

enior Amanda Artman scored a game-tying goal, and then assisted on two others, leading The College of Wooster field hockey team to a 4-3 win over Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday, while matching the North Coast Athletic Conference's most coveted individual record in the process.

Artman has now scored 165 career points (67 goals, 31 assists), which ties her with Wittenberg University's Amy Kraus (1994-97) as the all-time leader in NCAC history. One more goal or assist tallied by Artman over the Fighting Scots' next nine games would distinguish her as the conference's best scorer ever.

Ohio Wesleyan (5-5, 4-3 NCAC) outshot Wooster (9-1, 6-1 NCAC) by a slim 14-13 count, and both teams would take 12 penalty corners, but it would be penalty strokes that produced the game's initial scoring. Christa Cocumelli converted a stroke with 12:55 remaining in the first half that put the Battling Bishops ahead 1-0 going into the break. Less than a minute into the second, the Scots were awarded a penalty stroke of their own and Artman beat the goalkeeper for her 18th goal of the season to knot the game.

Next, Eileen Barrer scored two goals over a two-minute span, including one assisted by Artman and another in the contest's 49th minute in which she weaved through several defenders and rattled the cage to give Wooster a 3-1 cushion. The teams would trade goals several minutes later when Cocumelli tallied her second of the game, only to see Maddie Hart respond with a goal on Artman's record-tying assist just 11 seconds later that salvaged the Scots' two-goal lead (4-2).

With 4:38 remaining on the clock, Ohio Wesleyan's Macie Miller would score on a rebound after Cocumelli had her shot blocked by Madalyn Myers, bringing the Bishops within one. In the closing seconds, Ohio Wesleyan would draw a penalty corner giving it one last opportunity to score, but Wooster's defense cleared the attempt to record the conference win.

The Scots will play in non-league action when they travel to St. Mary's College of Maryland this Saturday for a noon start.
