Scots Can’t Convert in Waning Moments, Fall to W&J 1-0

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster had a couple of high-quality scoring chances during the final minute of play, but was unable to punch in the equalizer, settling for a 1-0 loss at the hands of Washington & Jefferson College in non-league field hockey action Wednesday at Cindy Barr Field.

Trailing by one since early in the second half, Wooster (10-5) steadily pressured the defense and its best opportunities came over the final 60 seconds. In one scramble in front of the cage, Eileen Barrer attempted a backhand with it sliding just wide of the cage. The Fighting Scots earned two penalty corners during the final moments, as Kate Valora put a good hit on one ball, only to be saved by the 'keeper, and with no time remaining on the clock, Washington & Jefferson (5-5) managed to clear the second corner out of the circle without allowing a shot.

The lone score of the game came 5:17 into the second when the Presidents' Kolbey Seidel blasted one through the Wooster defense from the top of the circle after receiving a pass from Julianne Zackey during a penalty corner.

In the first half, a couple of Scot backs turned away would-be Washington & Jefferson goals, first Katrina Wojciechowski on a corner attempt and later Lauren Grimanis.

Overall, Wooster goalie Madalyn Myers was credited with nine saves, while two Presidents' goalies combined for seven.

The Scots return to North Coast Athletic Conference play this Saturday afternoon, as Earlham College (4-6, 1-6 NCAC) pays its annual visit. The game will be played at John P. Papp Stadium.
