Standera’s Late Goal Forces OT, but St. Mary’s Upends Scots 2-1

The College of Wooster field hockey team was held scoreless until a game-tying goal in the 62nd minute pushed overtime, but St. Mary's College of Maryland would blast in the winning score in the extra period to knock off the Fighting Scots 2-1 on Saturday at St. Mary's City, Md.

The Seahawks (6-4) were in control early on, outshooting the Scots (9-2) by 11-5 in the first half, including a near goal in the opening minutes in which junior Stephanie Standera recorded a defensive save that halted the score. Then at the 5:41 mark, Lauriann Parker struck a ball that deflected off of the right post and into the net that gave St. Mary's an early 1-0 lead. The Hawks would keep the pressure on, tallying five more shots before the break, but sophomore goalkeeper Madalyn Myers made four saves to keep the deficit one.

Wooster would become more aggressive in the second half, but it was still held without a goal until there was only 8:29 remaining in regulation. During a penalty corner, Standera got loose and rattled the cage on a Brittany Montgomery assist that knotted the game at one apiece. It was Standera's second goal and Montgomery's second assist on the year. The game would then remain deadlocked over the final minutes of the second half forcing an overtime period.

Senior Amanda Artman took a team-high five shots in the game, including the first shot in overtime, but St Mary's 'keeper, Emma Lauhoff, made her sixth and final save. Just minutes later, Parker struck a hard hit ball past Myers that found the back of the net and gave the Seahwaks the dramatic win.

The Scots, who suffered just their second loss of the season and only the third in their last 18 games dating back to 2008, will look to rebound quickly as they travel to Ashland, Va., to play Randolph-Macon College (1-8) on Sunday at noon.
