Wooster Suffers First Loss of 2009 in Dramatic Fashion

Denison University scored with no time remaining in regulation to knock The College of Wooster from the ranks of the unbeaten in field hockey, as the Big Red overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit to prevail 3-2 in the teams' North Coast Athletic Conference meeting Saturday at Granville, Ohio.

With the score tied at two, it appeared to be headed towards overtime, however, Denison (6-4, 4-2 NCAC) was awarded with a penalty corner with :00 showing on the clock. In field hockey, a half can not end on a corner until the ball goes outside of the circle. On the Big Red's second penalty corner attempt with no time left, Kristen Schneider emerged with the ball in a crowd to the left of the cage and snuck it past the 'keeper for the game-winner.

Wooster (8-1, 5-1 NCAC), which had not scored less than four goals in a game this season, jumped out to the two-goal advantage with scores from Eileen Barrer and Amanda Artman during the first half. Barrer chipped one in over the head of Denison's goalie about midway through the half and then Artman made a one-on-one move to get free for her league-leading 17th goal at the 6:41 mark.

After being outshot 7-3 in the first, the Big Red would control much of the action the second half, owning a 10-3 shot advantage. They made good on three of those chances, the first two coming within the opening 15 minutes from Schneider and Brooke Donovan, both on corners.

Defensively, the Scots' Madalyn Myers was credited with seven saves in the setback.

Wooster will look to bounce back on Wednesday at Ohio Wesleyan University (5-4, 4-2 NCAC) at 4:30 p.m.
