Artman Scores Four Times in 7-2 Win Over Wittenberg

WOOSTER, Ohio – It didn't take long for The College of Wooster to get acclimated to playing at John P. Papp Stadium, as Amanda Artman and the Fighting Scots blitzed Wittenberg University early en route to a 7-2 victory on Saturday.

The Fighting Scots (7-0, 5-0 NCAC) played for the first time on the new synthetic playing surface (Sprinturf) at Papp Stadium, and Artman had a banner day, as she continuously got open and made plays on her way to scoring a career-high four goals. She became the first Wooster player to score four goals in a game since Anlyn Addis accomplished the feat in 2006, ironically, against Wittenberg.

Just 21 seconds into the game, sophomore Maddie Hart scored on a breakaway that instantly put the Scots ahead. Then one minute later, Hart would score again, this time weaving her way 40-yards downfield through several Wittenberg defenders and blasting a shot into the cage that made it 2-0. Brittany Montgomery would get involved in the action, as she scored at the 3:50 mark, giving the Scots a 3-0 cushion in the game's opening minutes.

From that point on Artman would take over the game, scoring Wooster's final four goals in a variety of ways. Artman rattled the cage on a Stephanie Standera assist in the game's 13th minute, and then again on an unassisted score with 2:41 left in the first half that gave the Scots a 5-0 lead. She would score on a penalty stroke in the game's 50th minute, and then one more time on a one-touch pass from Kate Valora to close out a remarkable performance.

Sophomore goalkeeper Madalyn Myers tallied seven saves in the win, including one where she sprawled out to smack away a would-be-goal. Wittenberg's Boo Vernon scored with 1:04 remaining in the first half when Myers blocked a shot, but Vernon retrieved the deflection and blasted in a goal. Hannah Scheckelhoff would record the Tigers other score on an assist from Elizabeth Dwyer.

The Scots will look to make it eight wins in a row when they host Ithica College at Cindy Barr Field on Sunday at 1 p.m.
