OWU Tops Wooster 2-1 in NCAC Tourney Rematch

WOOSTER, Ohio – In a rematch of last season's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament finals, Ohio Wesleyan University one-upped The College of Wooster this time around, dropping the Fighting Scots 2-1 to kick-off the 2010 season at John P. Papp Stadium.

Scoring opportunities were sparse in the early goings, but Ohio Wesleyan (1-0, 1-0 NCAC) eventually got on the scoreboard when Christa Cocumelli located Calina Hilyard near the cage in the 24th minute. The Bishops went into the break holding onto a 1-0 lead, despite Wooster's six penalty corners in the opening stanza.

The Scots (0-1, 0-1 NCAC) answered back with about 23 minutes remaining in the game, when Amanda Artman drove deep into Ohio Wesleyan territory and dished a crisp pass to Amanda Graeser, who tied the game with a one-touch goal. Artman nearly gave Wooster the lead minutes later, but just missed wide on a good look.

With just over 16 minutes to go in regulation, Ohio Wesleyan's Macie Miller was in the right place at the right time, as she intercepted a Wooster pass and scored the go-ahead goal. In the closing minutes, Eileen Barrer had a shot attempt sail wide, and Artman saw her potential score get saved, as the Bishops hung on and won 2-1.

Wooster held an advantage in shots (11-8) and penalty corners (13-5) in the setback. Liz Plumley made the first start of her career in goal and recorded three saves.

The Scots will be back in action this Saturday when they host Centre College at 1 p.m.
