Wooster Stunned By Earlham at End of Overtime

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster field hockey team lost another heartbreaker at home, as Earlham College's Torrie Studebaker buried a penalty stroke with seven seconds left in overtime to lift the Quakers to a 1-0 win on Saturday morning at John P. Papp Stadium.

Earlham (9-5, 3-0 North Coast Athletic Conference) had a breakaway try in progress in the closing seconds, and a Quaker was tripped inside the circle, setting the stage for the stroke try.

Earlier in overtime, Earlham's Denise Bergdolt nearly sent the Quakers home a winner in the 63rd minute. The Quakers' sophomore had Wooster's defense beat, and looked to deposit her team-leading 10th goal into the far corner, only to have it hit off the far post.

Wooster (3-9, 0-4 NCAC) had Earlham's defense out of position in the 65th minute, but the Scots were whistled for a foul before the Black and Gold were able to get off a good look. Junior Maggie Brown did have two shots on target after that, including a breakaway in the 67th minute, but Earlham 'keeper Meg Murphy was up to the task both times.

The Scots did get off to a good start offensively, as Wooster had two good looks off a penalty corner in the seventh minute. Senior Harriet Sudduth received the insert from Brown, and ripped a shot toward the cage that Murphy stopped. Junior Caitlyn O'Connor tracked down the rebound, only to have her shot denied by Murphy.

Earlham controlled the action late in the third period, and the Quakers were rewarded for their efforts in the form of a pair of penalty corners in the final two minutes. Wooster junior Katie Shideler made a pair of spectacular stops on Bergdolt's shot attempts.

In the fourth period, Murphy made a diving stop on Sudduth's shot attempt in the 46th minute, which came on a penalty corner. Shideler was equally impressive in the 54th minute. That's when Bergdolt sprung free in front of the cage, and the Scots' 'keeper was able to make the save and maintain possession until Wooster's defense rallied for the clear.

Earlham edged out Wooster on shots 16-15, while penalty corners were even at 11 each.

Murphy and Shideler finished with seven saves each.

The loss was Wooster's sixth by a single goal this year.
