Scots Open Season, Fall in Double Overtime
Barkdoll logs eight saves in lid-lifter
WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster field hockey team had two looks at a game-winner in overtime before visiting Sweet Briar College scored the game's lone goal in the second extra stanza on Sunday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.
Sweet Briar's (1-1) Kailey McCarthy gained possession on the far sideline and passed the ball towards Gigi Hutman in the 73rd minute. Hutman tracked the lead pass down and fired the game-winner past Wooster junior goalkeeper Cate Barkdoll, who made two saves in the first overtime period to keep the game scoreless.
In the first overtime period, junior Lizzie Hardy had a good look in the 70th minute that went just wide, while Fankie Zehnal's bid at a game-winner in the first-year's collegiate debut went high in the 62nd minute.
Early in the fourth, Barkdoll denied Sweet Briar a one-on-one chance, making a diving save on an Emmi Burdine shot. Not long after, Wooster found some sustained traction offensively, earning three penalty corners within 40 seconds. Swett Briar held Wooster to two shots off the three corners.
In the third, Hardy was on the verge of having a one-on-'keeper scoring chance, but Sweet Briar's Ashley Maggiora was able to get out in time to knock the ball safely away. Early-game highlights included a Sweet Briar shot from Hutman going just high of the crossbar in the opening minutes. On Wooster's end, sophomore Audrey McKenna cleared away a Vixen scoring threat in the sixth minute.
Barkdoll totaled eight saves, six of which came in the second half or overtime. Maggiora logged two saves. Sweet Briar had a 14-9 edge on shots, and a 7-6 lead on penalty corners.
Next, Wooster hosts Marian University (Wisconsin) (2-0) at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 7.
