Third-Quarter Dominance Lifts Wooster to First Win, 4-2
Barkdoll ties career-high in saves, Zehnal scores twice
WOOSTER, Ohio – Junior Cate Barkdoll matched a career-best with 13 saves, and three different Fighting Scots scored in Saturday's 4-2 College of Wooster field hockey win over Concordia University Wisconsin. The win marked Lauren Voigt's first as head coach at the College.
Junior Natalie Katzenmeyer opened the high-scoring affair, working a goal through traffic in the 10th minute. Classmate Lizzie Hardy left a lead pass in the perfect spot for the junior midfielder, who netted goal eight of her career. The Katzenmeyer-Hardy connection was there again later, this time with Hardy as the scorer. Hardy's 39th-minute, go-ahead goal was a shot from halfway between the top of the offensive circle and the cage. The goal marked Hardy's 11th of her career, and she is second among active Wooster (1-3) players for most career goals.
Wooster's other scores came on the strength of exceptional stick skills from first-year Frankie Zehnal. Zehnal took the ball in and finished in front of the cage to make it 2-1 in the 32nd minute for collegiate goal one. Later, the first-year brought the ball into the critical scoring area and quickly tucked in goal two beyond the reach of Parks Cawthray.
Concordia's (1-4) Rylee Binley tried to answer Hardy's go-ahead goal and was denied twice by Barkdoll. Wooster's all-conference 'keeper totaled seven of the co-career-best 13 saves in the third period alone. Three of the seven occurred in the final three minutes of the stanza. Earlier, Barkdoll turned away Katie Quirke and Emily Robertson when the score was tied at two.
Wooster's emphasis on a quick start paid dividends. Hardy fired off a shot just 1:14 in the game, and the Scots kept up the pressure deep in the Falcons' end all afternoon. When the final totals were booked into the NCAA's database, Wooster was at 23 shots, while Concordia totaled 24. The teams combined for 17 penalty corners and 24 saves.
Senior Ashley Reynolds upped Wooster's save count to 14 with defensive save two of the year, and that upped the team's log to five through four games.
Carlijn van der Bend made eight saves for Concordia. Cawthray and Bella Vandeloecht had one each.
Next, Wooster (0-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) heads to Denison University (1-4, 0-0 NCAC) for a 4:30 p.m. game on Wednesday, September 18.
