Scots Log Quartet of Defensive Saves in Saturday Home Game
DePauw tops Wooster 4-0
WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster field hockey team returned home and dropped a 4-0 contest to DePauw University on Saturday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.
Defensive saves continued to come in bunches for Wooster (1-5, 0-3 North Coast Athletic Conference). The Fighting Scots logged four on the day, including two by sophomore Melinda Lazenby. It was junior Natalie Katzenmeyer adding Wooster's first one to the game log just 2:13 into the contest when a shot by DePauw's (4-4, 2-0 NCAC) Ashley Appleby got past junior Cate Barkdoll. Lazenby turned away an Anna Marks shot in the 16th minute, thanks to a stick deflection over Barkdoll, who was on the ground defending against a low shot attempt by the Tigers.
DePauw's early third-period offensive surge was stopped by Wooster. Barkdoll made the initial save on Amy Apfelbaum's shot. On the rebound, senior Ashley Reynolds was in the right spot to stop Apfelbaum's follow-up scoring try. Lazenby was credited with Wooster's fourth defensive save of the afternoon in the 49th minute.
Hailey Nowak was the offensive star for DePauw, scoring the Tigers' first three goals. Nowak's first came in the 11th minute when she carried the ball in and shot from a couple yards one. A hard back-hander found the cage in the 22nd minute, while the junior knocked in a feed to the far post in the third quarter. DePauw's final goal was scored by Frances Seitz with four seconds remaining in the game on a tap-in at the far post.
Junior Lizzie Hardy was Wooster's go-to option on penalty corners. Hardy's shot on target in the 59th minute was saved by Olivia Streifel. Another goal-seeking try off Hardy's stick went just wide of the cage earlier in the contest.
DePauw finished with a 28-11 edge on shots and had 11 corners to Wooster's five. Barkdoll's 11 saves upped the season count to 66. The junior is third in the NCAC in saves.
Wooster has a quick turnaround with Earlham College (1-7, 1-1 NCAC) in town for a noon game on Sunday, September 29.
