Barkdoll Logs Career-High in Saves Versus Allegheny
Scots denied shutout late in 2-1 double overtime loss
WOOSTER, Ohio – Junior Cate Barkdoll kept The College of Wooster field hockey team in Wednesday night's game with a career-high 16 saves in the Fighting Scots' 2-1 loss to Allegheny College at John P. Papp Stadium.
Wooster (3-7, 1-5 North Coast Athletic Conference) was 1:36 away from its second shutout of the season when Allegheny's (4-10, 4-3 NCAC) Maddy Keenan played spoiler, tying the game at one. Keenan secured a rebound carrom, created enough space, and deposited the tying goal into the left side. Right before, Bardkoll denied Caroline Smith, Keenan fired a shot wide, and a Samantha Mura try at the equalizer was sent aside by Barkdoll.
Jenna Cassani scored the winner with 3:24 remaining in the second overtime stanza. The Gators' senior inserted a corner, then finished on a pass to the post from Jamie Marchewka.
Wooster's goal came from first-year Frankie Zehnal in the first period. The Scots' midfielder scored from about 12 yards out for goal three of the season.
Wooster earned the first corner of the second overtime, and junior Lizzie Hardy was the target of classmate Joey Beckerman's insert. Hardy's shot was saved by Rowan O'Toole. Wooster had two more shots in the second stanza that were not on goal.
Hardy's shot late in the first overtime was blocked and that was Wooster's best chance in the first extra session. Allegheny had a big threat midway through the first overtime, getting three consecutive shots off that were all on target. Barkdoll was the iron gate, denying Allegheny, with four of the 16 saves coming in the 66th and 67th minutes.
Wooster had a good look early in the fourth stanza on a corner. The ball was worked to inserter Audrey McKenna at the post, and both shots by the sophomore were saved by O'Toole.
Allegheny had 31 shots to Wooster's 19, but penalty corners were nearly even. The Gators held a slight 10-9 corner advantage. O'Toole finished with eight saves.
Next, Wooster is at Oberlin College (0-10, 0-6 NCAC) for a noon game on Saturday, October 19.
