Scots Down Yeowomen Again in Shootout
Hardy, McKenna convert for Scots in shootout
OBERLIN, Ohio – The College of Wooster field hockey team was victorious again in a shootout at Oberlin College, with this 1-0 win counting as a North Coast Athletic Conference one.
Wooster (4-7, 2-5 NCAC) and Oberlin (0-11, 0-7 NCAC) met on October 3 in a non-conference contest, and like that one, neither team scored in regulation or either overtime segment, setting the stage for the shootout.
Oberlin went first, with Johana Horvath taking on Wooster junior 'keeper Cate Barkdoll. Barkdoll made the save, then kicked the ball away to prevent Horvath from continuing the attempt.
Oberlin did strike first, as Barkdoll's initial stop on Bella Tilford's shootout try slowed the ball down. However, it stayed alive enough for Tilford to push it across the line.
Next, Wooster junior Lizzie Hardy crossed up Janny McCormick and flicked the tying try up and over the Yeowomen's goalie. It was 2-1 Wooster once sophomore Audrey McKenna spun and had just enough on the loose ball push for it to cross the line.
Oberlin's third and fourth chances never materialized, as stick handling by Elly Scheer and Meaghan Kramer led to the ball rolling out of range for on-target shot attempts. Paloma Szyfer did get a shot off on Oberlin's fifth attempt, but it was wide of the cage.
Offensive chances were at a premium throughout the game, with the teams combining for 13 shots. Wooster had seven of them, including the lone one in the two 10-minute overtime segments. First-year Teagan Fullen was the shooter in double overtime. Fullen's shot was saved by McCormick.
Oberlin's latest big chance came in the final minute of the first overtime when the Yeowomen were awarded a penalty corner. No shot came on the try. The same could not be said at the end of regulation when two Yeowomen shots in the final two minutes were blocked on their way to the cage. Both of those following a corner insert.
First-year Frankie Zehnal took three of Wooster's seven shots. Sophomore Brooke Benjamin, Fullen, sophomore Naledi Jani, and senior Ashley Reynolds were the others credited with shots in the game.
Tilford attempted three of Oberlin's six shots.
Barkdoll had one save in the shutout. McCormick turned aside three Wooster shots.
Wooster returns to action at 12 p.m. on Saturday, October 26 against Transylvania University (5-7, 3-5 NCAC).
