No. 15 Wooster Overwhelms Geneva 100-48
Fighting Scots race out to 35-4 lead, five players reach double figures
WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster, ranked 15th in this week's D3hoops.com top-25 poll, was too much for Geneva College on Wednesday night as the Fighting Scots raced out to a 35-4 lead 11 minutes into the game and cruised to a 100-48 victory at Timken Gymnasium.
Wooster (10-2) completed its second-straight season with a perfect record in non-conference regular season action and now owns a streak of 20 wins in a row in such games.
With the Scots dropping in 16 of their first 20 shots, a .800 field-goal rate, while equally effective on the defensive end, there was no doubt as to the outcome a little more than midway through the first half. In fact, Wooster scored the game's first 12 points, then after Geneva (3-9) made it 19-4, the hosts tacked on a 16-0 run for the 31-point cushion.
The Scots expanded the lead to as much as 42 (56-14) during the opening half and went into the break ahead 57-18, which included a .688 field-goal percentage.
During the first five minutes of the second, the Golden Tornadoes put together a 14-3 stretch to pull within 28 at 60-32, but Wooster responded with a 15-1 run en route to the 52-point win. The margin of victory was the Scots' biggest since opening up the 2006-07 season by thumping Cabrini College 128-71.
Wooster wound up with season highs in field-goal percentage (.623), assists (22), and steals (14), while limiting Geneva to 30.6 percent from the floor (15-of-49) and owning a 36-28 advantage in rebounding.
All 12 Scots that got into the game scored with five reaching double figures. Kenny DeBoer and Justin Hallowell tallied 14 points apiece, with DeBoer adding three assists and three steals. Hallowell posted a game-high seven rebounds to take the team lead in that category for the season.
On the inside, Josh Claytor and Jake Mays each scored 13 points on a combined 11-for-13 from the field, and Xavier Brown contributed 11 markers in the scorebook. Also of note, Matt Fegan made all three of his 3-pointers for nine points.
The Golden Tornadoes' Dave Phillips managed a game-high 23 points.
The focus for Wooster will now be taking a run at the North Coast Athletic Conference championship, as it looks to improve its 1-2 record in league play when Oberlin College (4-7, 0-3 NCAC) visits Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
