Senior forward Justin Hallowell of The College of Wooster was selected to the All-Great Lakes Team by both D3hoops.com and the National Association of Basketball Coaches on Monday, earning first-team honors from the former and second-team from the latter, and freshman guard Xavier Brown was voted the region's Rookie of the Year by the popular website.
Hallowell capped his career with his best season, leading the team in scoring (13.9 ppg) and rebounding (6.8 rpg) while propelling Wooster to the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament title and to the sectionals (Round of 16) of the NCAA Div. III Championship. While renowned for his 3-point ability, Hallowell developed an all-around game, scoring in a variety of ways with 76 3-pointers (.404 percentage), 69 two-point field goals (.468), and 65 free throws (.774) this year, and defensively, he contributed 21 blocks in addition to his work on the boards. Hallowell played particularly well down the stretch, averaging 19.6 points and 8.0 rebounds the last eight games, with five of his 16 career 20-point games coming in that time.
For his career, Hallowell broke the school and conference record for 3-pointers made (305) and finished just shy of 1,500 career points, tying for eighth on the Scots' career scoring list (1,491). He also ranks fourth in team history in free throw percentage (.838; 218-for-260) and tied for fifth in games played (121).
Brown exploded on to the collegiate scene, averaging 18.1 points his first seven games, and wound up as Wooster's second-leading scorer at 12.9 per outing. He also was second on the team in steals (31), third in assists (48), and fifth in rebounding (3.5 rpg), while converting 43.4 percent of his field goals and 73.1 percent at the free throw line. Two of Brown's best games came against rival Wittenberg University as he scored 21 points in the first meeting and 24 in the second, which included a buzzer-beating jump shot that extended the game into overtime.
The duo was among the key players who led the Scots to a 26-5 record, as the program extended its NCAA Div. III-leading active streak of 20-win seasons to 16. Wooster's record streak of NCAC championships came to an end at seven, as it finished runner-up in the regular season (12-4), but it bounced back to win a fourth-straight NCAC Tournament and then two games in the NCAA Div. III Championship before barely falling to Illinois Wesleyan University 69-67 during the third round.
