Pannell Honored on NABC All-District Team
Senior small forward among the best in the Great Lakes
2014-15 NABC All-Great Lakes District Team
Evan Pannell, a senior for The College of Wooster, was voted to the All-Great Lakes District Second Team by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, the NABC announced on Wednesday. The deserving honor marks the first all-district recognition for the small forward.
Pannell finished his career with his best season by far, emerging as Wooster's leading scorer at 15.6 points per night and he did so in an efficient manner, shooting 51.0 percent from the field (39.7 percent on 3-pointers) and 71.7 percent at the charity stripe. The 6-2, 190-pound athletic wing's offensive output doubled his previous best season average (7.8 ppg), and similarly, his 6.1 rebounds were significantly more than his former high (3.6 rpg).
Pannell, who played a team-high 30.6 minutes per game, also notched career highs in assists (1.9 apg) and steals (1.1 spg).
Among his season highlights, Pannell was the defensive MVP of the Al Van Wie/Wooster Rotary Classic; he hit a game-winning 3-pointer with 18.9 seconds left when Wooster edged DePauw University 63-62 Jan. 24; he recorded double-doubles in both contests against nationally-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University; he scorched the nets for a career-high 30 points to help the Scots beat their rival, Wittenberg University, 104-97 on Jan. 17, and he notched 12 other 20-point games, including 23 at Marietta College in the second round of the NCAA Div. III Men's Basketball Championship, which allowed him to reach the 1,000-point milestone for his career (1,005).
With Pannell leading the way, Wooster went 23-7 for its 19th consecutive 20-win season – the longest active streak in NCAA Div. III – and the Scots were runner-up in the North Coast Athletic Conference, both in the regular season (to Ohio Wesleyan) and in the tournament (to DePauw). Wooster advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the seventh season in a row.
