Hempy Tabbed as NABC's District Player of the Year, Named to D3hoops.com All-Region First-Team

The College of Wooster's Danyon Hempy has been selected as the National Association of Basketball Coaches NCAA Div. III Great Lakes District Player of the Year, which was announced by the coaches' organization on Tuesday. The senior guard was also a first-team D3hoops.com All-Great Lakes Region selection, as announced by the popular website on Tuesday.
Hempy's the fifth Fighting Scot to be named the NABC's Great Lakes District Player of the Year in the last 18 seasons, and he joins legends Bryan Nelson (2002-03), Tom Port (2006-07), Ian Franks (2009-10), and Doug Thorpe (2013-14). He's the 10th Wooster great to earn a second NABC All-District certificate in the 60-year history of the organization's all-district team, and he joins Wooster greats Stan Aukamp (2), James Cooper (2), Tom Dinger (3), Franks (2), Ryan Gorman (3), and Nelson (2) as multi-time first-team all-district performers. He's also Wooster's first first-team D3hoops.com All-Region honoree since Spencer Williams (2017-18), and he's the ninth multi-time all-region selection by the popular website, which has sponsored an all-region team since the 2001-02 season.
Hempy, who finished his remarkable career third in program history with 2,031 points, was named the North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year this season, after leading the conference with 23.8 points per game. Hempy's 690 points from this season are the second-most in single-season program history, and he's just the second Wooster great to have two seasons with at least 600 points. Hempy's per-game average ranked 16th in Div. III, while his 690 points were the eighth-most within the division.
The psychology major averaged 4.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game during the 2019-20 season.
Hempy helped Wooster to a 21-8 record this year. Wooster made its NCAA Div. III record 18th consecutive (29th overall) appearance in the NCAA Div. III Championships, and the Scots had their 24th consecutive 20-win season.
