Wooster Golfers Wind Up Tied for 5th at Griffin Motors Classic
The College of Wooster golf team concluded the third of their
four fall tournaments with a 5th-place finish at the Griffin Motors
Classic (Sept. 29-30), which featured a highly-competitive field
playing at the par-72, 6614-yard The Country Club of Meadville in
Meadville, Pennsylvania.
Two of Wooster’s four individual scores on Saturday were in
the 70s, as the Fighting Scots’ 315 put them just 11 strokes
back of second-place. However, a 308 Sunday, in which Wooster
produced three more rounds in the 70s, turned into a 623 total,
jumping from 7th-place on day one to a tie for 5th in the final
team standings.
Allegheny College won the event in 579, behind medalist Billy
Wisniewski (68-74), while the runner-up was Ohio Wesleyan
University (587). Allegheny’s ‘B’ team carded a
two-day total of 605 (304-301) and took third place, followed by
Wittenberg University in fourth with a 614 (313-301) and Denison
University in a tie with Wooster with a 623 (310-313).
For the Scots, Patrick Lynch led the way with a 77 and a 72, good
for a tie for 8th-place in the individual standings (149). Five
strokes back was teammate Jim Ipema, tying for 19th (78-76), while
also scoring both days for Wooster was Erik Shoger, who shot 80-81
to tie for 29th.
Additionally, Sean Glaser carded a 79 Sunday, but had an 82 on
Saturday to finish tied in 29th with Shoger, and Jason Greenwald
scored an 80 on Saturday followed up by an 82 Sunday for the Scots
while tying for 31st overall.
The event marked the second of four North Coast Athletic Conference
tournaments to be played over the fall and spring seasons. After
the first two NCAC events, Allegheny holds a five-stroke
(1174-to-1179) lead over the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan,
with Wooster and Denison fighting for the third spot tied with 1238
and Wittenberg just four strokes out of third with 1242.
The Scots will conclude the fall portion of their schedule when
they travel to Danville, Ohio and take part in the Denison Fall
Invitational this Saturday and Sunday.
