Scots Cut 10 Strokes on Final Day, Finish Eighth at Lamkin Strimer Memorial Invite
The College of Wooster golf team produced a solid performance at
the Lamkin Strimer Memorial Invitational hosted by Ohio Wesleyan
University on April 12-13, slicing 10 strokes off its first round
score on its final 18 holes for a two-day total of 652, good enough
for eighth-place overall in the 11-team field.
On Saturday, the Fighting Scots carded a score of 331 on the
par-71, 6807-yard course at the Oakhaven Golf Club, good for
seventh place following the conclusion of day one. Wooster knocked
10 strokes off the previous day’s scores on the final day,
including two rounds in the 70s, on the par-71, 6,613-yard course,
tallying 321 strokes.
The host Battling Bishops won the team title by 14 strokes
(603-617) over North Coast Athletic Conference foe Wittenberg
University. Olivet College (621), Tri-State University (630),
Denison University (637), DePauw University (643), and Wabash
College (651) were the remaining teams to finish ahead of the
Scots.
Every one of Wooster’s starting five carded 80-plus scores on
the first day, due in part to cold and windy conditions. Senior
Jason Greenwald posted the low-round on each day (81-76) to finish
in a team-best tie for 14th (157), while classmate Pat Lynch carded
a final round of 79 after an opening round 85, finishing tied for
32nd overall (164).
After an 83 in the first round, sophomore Tim Sullivan fired an 82
on the second day to finish in a tie for 37th. Senior Eric Shoger
also posted an 86 on day one, and finished with a two-day total of
170 for a tie for 50th, while fellow classmate Jim Ipema rounded
out the starting five shooting an 82 during the opening round, but
struggled on day two and finished with a 176 for a tie for 59th
(82-94).
Competing as an individual for the Scots, freshman Tom Golding
carded rounds of 84 and 87 to tie for 53rd overall.
The Scot linksters will be in action next when they host their
annual tournament, the Nye Intercollegiate, this coming weekend
(April 14-15) at the Wooster Country Club.
