Scots 12th at Season-Opening Denison Fall Classic
The College of Wooster’s golf team finished in 12th place
at the Denison Fall Classic held at Granville Golf Course on
Saturday and Sunday. The event is the first of four in the 2008-09
North Coast Athletic Conference Golf Championship Series.
The Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops totaled up a final
score of 579 Sunday and won the Invitational. Ohio Wesleyan
finished 12 strokes ahead of second-place John Carroll University,
which racked up a total of 591. Behind John Carroll, NCAC foe
Allegheny College wound up in third place with a team score of 597,
while Wittenberg University placed fourth (599), DePauw University
was fifth (601), and host Denison finished in sixth (602).
For the Scots, freshman Blake Sword led the way with a 77 and an
80, good for a tie for 51st in the individual standings (157). Ohio
Wesleyan's Jeff Nieman shot a tournament-best score of 138 in the
two-day event for medalist honors.
Two strokes back of Sword was freshman teammate Michael Peters,
tying for 63rd (77-82), while also scoring both days for Wooster
was sophomore Kevin Truitt, who shot 79-82 to tie for 72nd.
Additionally, junior Tim Sullivan bounced back from an 84 Saturday,
and scored for Wooster with an 80 to finish in a tie for 77th with
freshman Greg Benckart, who shot an 85 Saturday followed by a
team-low 79 in his final round Sunday.
Next up for the Scots is the Guy W. Kuhn Invitational hosted by
Allegheny College. The two-day event is set for Sunday and Monday,
Sept. 21-22 at the Meadville Country Club.
