Scots Top the Field at Kenyon Invite, Marking First Tourney Win Since 2003
The College of Wooster golf team overcame challenging weather
conditions Sunday to hang on for its first tournament victory since
the 2002-03 season, as the Fighting Scots were two shots better
than Mercyhurst College during the 36-hole Kenyon Invitational at
Apple Valley Golf Course in Howard, Ohio.
While Wooster had come close with six runner-up finishes at various
events the last six years, this marks its first tourney win since
the 2003 Denison University Spring Invitational.
The Fighting Scots entered the final 18 holes well ahead of the
competition, behind Saturday’s 317. That stood 11 strokes in
front of then-second-place Wilmington College, but Wooster
struggled throughout its lineup during the cold and rainy
conditions that plagued central Ohio on Sunday. The Scots put up a
343 for a 660 total, which was just enough to edge out Mercyhurst
(662) and Walsh University (666), while the remaining members of
the eight-team field were well behind.
Individually, Scot freshman Michael Peters finished alone in
second-place, covering the par-72, 6,946-yard course in 78 and 80
for his highest showing to date. Two other Wooster first-years,
Blake Sword and Greg Benckart, were also among the top-15 in the
standings. Sword shot relatively consistent rounds of 80 and 84 for
11th-place, while Benckart turned in a 77, followed by an 89, to
tie for 14th.
Rounding out the Scots’ lineup were Tim Sullivan and Kevin
Truitt. Sullivan fired a solid 82 as part of the team score on
Saturday and Truitt scored Sunday with a 90, as they tied for 34th
(176) and 50th (186), respectively.
Next for Wooster is Denison’s now-named Ted Barclay Spring
Invitational this Friday and Saturday.
