Scots Finish Sixth at NCACs, Peters Second Team All-NCAC
The College of Wooster golf team wrapped up its 2008-09 season,
finishing in sixth place with a total of 977 strokes over the
54-hole North Coast Athletic Conference Invitational on Saturday
and Sunday. Freshman Michael Peters was named Second Team All-NCAC
for his play during the season-long NCAC Championships. The two-day
event was hosted by Allegheny College at the par-72, 6,629-yard
Meadville Country Club.
Ohio Wesleyan University captured its third-straight NCAC
postseason crown with an 898, as well as the conference’s new
season-long championship, which encompasses the results from three
regular season events plus the NCAC Championships. The Battling
Bishops’ overall score was 2,650, bettering last
season’s stroke total by 19, and they received the
league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Div. III
Championships.
In contention for an at-large bid to nationals is Wittenberg
University, which was runner-up at both the postseason championship
(918) and in the overall standings (2,745). Host Allegheny shot
well for the NCAC Championships and could get a look for an
at-large bid, finishing third (921) this weekend and during the
season (2,758), while Denison University wound up fifth in the
postseason tournament (967), but fourth in the final team standings
(2,831). Wabash’s 951 strokes over the two-day event slot it
in fourth place, and give the Little Giants a season total of
2,857, good for fifth place in the final standings, while the Scots
finished the 54-hole event with 977 strokes, and conclude their
season with a team total of 2,908, as both marks are good for sixth
place.
Holding true to form, leading the Scots once again was Peters, as
he tied for 15th overall at the postseason championship. The
first-year Fighting Scot shot two rounds in the 70s (76-83-77),
carding team-lows over the first 18 and final 18 holes. He tallied
a season-long 706 at the four required NCAC events in 2008-09.
Also for Wooster, freshman Blake Sword didn’t figure into the
team score during the first 18 holes with an 89, but rebounded with
rounds of 76 and 81 to finish tied for 22nd with a 246 score.
Classmate Tim Faerber scored all rounds for Wooster, and wound up
29th (85-83-82). Posting a score toward the team total for Wooster
in all three rounds was freshman Greg Benckart, who ended just one
stroke behind Faerber in 30th (87-83-81). Sophomore Kevin Truitt
scored during the opening round for Wooster with an 83, but fired
scores of 96 and 87 for a 226 and a 38th-place finish.
