Scots Tie for Third During Challenging Conditions at Own Nine-Team Nye Intercollegiate
The College of Wooster golf team shaved eight strokes from
Saturday’s first round, going from a 331 score to a 323 on
Sunday en route to a tie for third-place finish at its own Nye
Intercollegiate, held at the par-72, 6,454-yard Wooster Country
Club in Wooster, Ohio. Both days of the annual 36-hole event saw
unseasonably warm temperatures, in addition to a steady breeze,
gusting more than 30 M.P.H. at times, which resulted in fast greens
and tough scoring conditions overall.
Baldwin-Wallace College adapted the best out of the nine-team
field, as the Yellow Jackets took home the championship
(318-310=628), 19 strokes ahead of the runner-up, Otterbein College
(329-318=647). Wooster tied with Albion College (333-321=654),
while edging North Coast Athletic Conference rival Wabash College
(330-332=662). The other four teams were well behind.
Highlighting the Fighting Scots was the play of Michael Peters, as
the freshman finished alone in third-place while continuing his
standout season. He carded consisted rounds of 78 and 77 for an
11-over 155, maintaining his year-long scoring average of 77.5. The
only two ahead of him both hailed from Baldwin-Wallace in medalist
Matt Weiss (76-76=152) and Mike Falk (77-76=153).
Others in the top-20 individual standings for Wooster were Blake
Sword and Tim Faerber, also members of the first-year class. Sword
did a better job of handling the challenging conditions over the
second 18, tying for 16th (84-81=164) and Faerber shot identical
rounds of 83 to tie for 19th (166).
Also in the starting lineup this weekend were freshman Greg
Benckart and sophomore Kevin Truitt. Benckart contributed an 82 on
Sunday as part of a tie for 30th-place (173), while Truitt was in
the team score Saturday via an 86 en route to a 35th-place tie
(175).
Noteworthy, the remaining four players on Wooster’s roster
also took part at the Nye Intercollegiate as they jockeyed for a
position in next week’s season-ending NCAC Invitational.
Making the strongest case for a spot in the lineup was junior Tim
Sullivan, who tied for 16th overall (82-83=165).
The NCAC Invite will be hosted by Allegheny College at the Country
Club of Meadville.
