Wooster Notches Season-High Third-Place Effort at Denison

With three individuals finishing among the top-10, The College of Wooster golf team produced a season-best result this weekend as the Fighting Scots placed third overall at Denison University's annual Ted Barclay Invitational at Granville Golf Course in Granville, Ohio.

Wooster was sitting second out of seven squads after Saturday when all five of its starters shot in the 70s at the par-71, 6,559-yard course, scoring a 310. The Scots slipped just slightly during Sunday with a 311 for a 621 total over the 36 holes, which was just 11 strokes off the pace of event champion Allegheny College (611) and one behind Baldwin-Wallace College (620). Wooster came in ahead of host Denison (622) as well as Muskingum University (639), Mercyhurst College (651), and Kenyon College (667).

Blake Sword turned in back-to-back rounds of 76 to earn fourth-place (152) among the field of 45 and lead the Scots. He was just four shy of individual medalist Nick Bryan of Baldwin-Wallace (74-74=148). Sword was joined in the top-10 by teammates Greg Benckart, who turned in two rounds in the 70s to tie for eighth (77-78=155), and Michael Peters, who tied for 10th-place (79-77=156).

Also starting for Wooster were Tim Faerber and Tim Sullivan, with the former having his score count each day en route to a tie for 17th (78-80=158) and the latter tying for 31st (79-84=163). Noteworthy, the Scots' Tim Golding competed as an individual and was solid as well with rounds of 78 and 81.

Next weekend, Wooster will be at the Wittenberg Invitational, which is the third of the four-part North Coast Athletic Conference Golf Championship Series. The Scots are currently in fourth-place.
