Wooster Cards Fifth-Place Finish at NCAC Championships

Highlighted by a second-round team score of 319, The College of Wooster placed fifth at this weekend's North Coast Athletic Conference Championships, held at the par-72, 6,493-yard Mount Vernon Country Club in Mount Vernon, Ohio, and also claimed fourth-place in the NCAC Golf Championship Series for the third time in the last four years.

Wooster entered this weekend's event likely to secure fourth-place in the final NCAC standings, as it trailed third-place Allegheny College by 44 strokes, and was up 29 strokes on fifth-place Wabash College. Ohio Wesleyan University edged out Wittenberg University by four strokes (914-918) during the 54-hole battle, but the Tigers had a 39-stroke cushion heading into Friday and cruised to first-place in the final series standings.

The Scots had two individuals rank among the top-13, as Tim Faerber (T-9th) and Michael Peters (T-13th) competed at a high level and carded the team's two lowest rounds. Faerber (75-81-80=236) was just 12 stokes behind the individual medalist, and Peters (84-73-80=237) second-round score of 73 was the fourth-lowest recorded during the entire weekend.

Blake Sword (81-81-83=247) was consistent in all three rounds and finished tied for 20th-place overall, while classmate Greg Benckart (83-84-86=253) wasn't far behind.

It was Sword who also claimed Wooster's highest individual honor, as he was named to the All-NCAC Second Team, while Faerber earned a nod as an honorable mention.

Wittenberg's Ben Smith was the NCAC individual medalist (74-71-79=224) at the NCAC Championships, but it was Ohio Wesleyan's Jesse Chiero (75-74-76=225) that garnered the Dick Gordin Player of the Year Award.
