Scots Tie for Ninth-Place at Own Nye Intercollegiate

Despite playing the final two-plus hours in rain, Malone University's Tyler Light set a tournament record, finishing with a 36-hole total of 142 while taking medalist honors at The College of Wooster's Nye Intercollegiate, which was held at the Wooster Country Club Friday and Saturday.

Light's 142, consisting of a 73 over the first 18 and then a 69, resulted in two-under par at the par-72, 6,454-yard course, and he led the Pioneers to the team championship among a field of 16 as they scored 590. Another Malone player, Ben Smith, broke the tourney mark for lowest 18 via a 67 on Friday.

The highly-competitive event saw the host school wind up in the middle of the pack. Wooster shot relatively consistent rounds of 322 and 319 for a 641, tying Ohio Northern University for ninth-place, but they were both just five strokes shy of a top-six placement.

Playing the last competitive rounds at what has been his home course over the last four years, the Scots' lone senior, Tim Sullivan, put forth one of the best showings of his career. He carded a 75 on day one, followed by a respectable 81 for a 16th-place finish (156). Sophomore teammate Michael Peters was in the upper 70s both rounds, good for a tie for 17th (79-78=157).

Fellow sophomores Blake Sword and Greg Benckart both scored for Wooster each day. They each turned in an 84 over the first 18, but Sword bounced back with a 75 to move up into a tie for 24th. Benckart closed out with an 85, tying for 53rd (169), while the squad's other starter, Tim Faerber, was not able to get in the scoring after tallying an 88 and an 87 en route to 63rd-place (175).

Also competing as individuals over the two days for the Scots were Adam Finck, Tim Golding, and David Boardman, who tied for 36th (81-82=163), 53rd (89-80=169), and 55th (86-84=170), respectively.

Wooster will wrap up its season with the 54-hole North Coast Athletic Conference Invitational next week. The Scots currently sit fourth in the nine-team league standings.
