Wooster Just Five Strokes Shy of First-Place at Kenyon Invite

Blake Sword The College of Wooster men's golf team finished within five strokes of this weekend's champion, NCAA Div. II Gannon University, while placing third at the Kenyon Fall Invitational, which took place at the par-72, 6,493-yard Mt. Vernon Country Club in Mt. Vernon, Ohio.

Wooster was second after Saturday's 18 holes with a team score of 313, but slipped back slightly with a 330 during the second 18, as did all of the competitors with conditions much brisker Sunday, and the Fighting Scots wound up with a 643. Gannon's winning effort consisted of 306 and 332 for a 638.

Four in Wooster's lineup were among the top-10 individuals, paced by Blake Sword, who carded a four-over 76 and then an 80. That 156 put him all alone in third-place, while Niclas Nyqvist of Gannon took medalist honors with an impressive 146, firing a 74 followed by a 72.

The Scots' standout freshman, John Angelo, was solid again, tying for sixth (160) after posting a 78 and an 82, while teammate Greg Benckart was right behind in a tie for eighth-place (79-84=163). Tim Golding also supported the cause in earning 10th-place (80-84=164), and Wooster's fifth player was Adam Finck (89-86=175).

Next weekend, the Scots conclude the fall portion of their season at the Wittenberg Fall Invitational.
