Scots Cap Weekend at Hiram's Tri-Match
Foltz the low Scot with an 80
Allegheny College edged out The College of Wooster men's golf team by five strokes to win Hiram College's Tri-Match on Sunday afternoon at the par-72, 6,571-yard Sugar Bush Golf Club in Garrettsville, Ohio.
Junior Ben Foltz was the low scorer for the Fighting Scots at 80, and he parlayed a steady back-nine into a fourth-place showing. Foltz's big contributions actually started on the front-nine with a birdie on the par-5, 521-yard No. 8, and that kicked off a six-hole stretch of pars or better. The computer science major, who led the field with a 4.30 average on par-4 holes, capped his round with three more pars, bringing his total for the day to 11 holes at par or better.
Senior David Roney, Saturday's medalist, did his part to try to rally the Scots back with an eagle on the par-5, 500-yard 15th hole, and like Foltz, he played the back-nine at 2-over-par. Roney's 81 placed him in a tie for fifth-place with teammate Tyler Hilbert.
Hilbert, a first-year, opened his round with a birdie on the first hole, and that marked the first of three birdies on the day on par-5 holes. In all, Hilbert led the Scots with four birdies, thanks to one on the par-4, 385-yard 11th hole.
First-year David Dennis rounded out the scorers at 85, while classmate Connor Mitchell had a 93 to round out the lineup. First-year Jacob Ullom led the "B" team and Wooster individuals with an 84.
Allegheny, which had a 322, was led by Ryan Dayton and Matthew Del Rosso, who carded 77s. The Gators' Shane Kelley took third-place at 78. Host Hiram shot a 369.
Next, Wooster's set to host Allegheny at Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna, Ohio, on Saturday, April 10.
