Playoff Birdies Help Secure Title for Scots at Bluffton Spring Invitational

Wooster golf team LIMA, Ohio – Birdies by sophomores David Dennis and Tyler Hilbert on the par-5, 490-yard 10th hole at Hidden Creek Golf Club helped break a tie between The College of Wooster men's golf team and Tiffin University's "B" Team, and send the Fighting Scots home winners of Bluffton University's Spring Invitational, which took place this weekend.

Wooster (316-304-620) and Tiffin (319-301-620) were deadlocked after 36 holes of play, setting the stage for the first team playoff for team champion in head coach Rich Danch's tenure with the program. The format consisted of all five players in the lineup playing No. 10 and taking the lowest four scores on the hole. Wooster checked in at 2-under-par, thanks in large part to Dennis and Hilbert, while Tiffin went 1-under-par.

First-year Krish Nayak anchored the lineup and was the low Scot both days. He opened with a 5-over-par 77 and finished with a 1-over-par 73 for a 150, the third-best score of the weekend. Nayak birdied four holes on the weekend, including the par-5, 530-yard 16th hole both days. He also carded 11 pars in each round.

Sophomore Jacob Ullom logged his second top-10 finish of the year at 156, which ranked in a tie for ninth-place. Ullom went 79-77 for the weekend. His cards had five circles on them, including back-to-back birdies on holes seven and eight and 16 and 17 on Sunday.

Senior Ben Foltz 80-77-157 tied for 15th-place. He went 2-over-par on Saturday's front-nine and closed with that score on Sunday's back-nine. Foltz sank a birdie on the par-3, 170-yard sixth hole Saturday and the 10th hole on Sunday.

Dennis 83-77-160 and Hilbert 80-80-160 tied for 21st-place. Hilbert's non-playoff birdie came on the par-five, 515-yard eighth hole Saturday, while Dennis carded five prior the Sunday's playoff.

Wooster had five other Scots at the event playing as a "B" team. First-year Noah Jackman tied for ninth-place to lead the quintet after back-to-back 78s.

Wooster's 304 on Sunday marked the second-lowest round of the tournament.

Wooster's last win at a traditional tournament – four or more teams – came at Miami University Hamilton's Harriers Fall Classic on September 30, 2018.

Host Bluffton was the runner-up among the nine "A" teams in the field. The Beavers shot 312-315-627.

Next, Wooster hosts the program's annual Nye Intercollegiate April 9-10 at Wooster Country Club.
