Wooster Victorious Again in Season Opener, Guthrie Finishes Under Par

Gabe Guthrie, Wooster Golf DOVER, Ohio – A championship was captured by The College of Wooster men's golf team on opening weekend once again, as the Fighting Scots emerged victorious for the second straight year at the program's Gatorade Collegiate, which was held over the weekend at the par-72, 6,733-yard Zoar Village Golf Course. Wooster followed up a year-opening 294 with a 292 to finish at 586, and won the tiebreaker over John Carroll University's "B" team for the team championship. Gabe Guthrie's 1-under-par 143 earned the sophomore tri-medalist honors, and he is just the third Scot since at least 1990 to finish a 36-hole tournament under par.

Wooster and John Carroll's "B" team were looking up at Capital University when Sunday's round started, as the Comets' 289 was the clubhouse leader. Both Wooster and John Carroll's "B" side fired 292s on Sunday, resulting in the Sunday's non-counting team score being used to decide the champion. First-year Jake Cammarata's 77 beat out John Carroll's Wade Boyle's 78. Capital was right behind in third-place at 587, while John Carroll's "A" group shot a 592.

Guthrie's sophomore year opened with a collegiate-best 1-under-par 71. The sophomore birdied the par-5, 511-yard second hole at Zoar, and was 3-under-par at Saturday's turn after rolling in consecutive birdies at the par-5, 546-yard seventh hole and the par-4, 366-yard eighth hole. One more birdie was in the cards for the sophomore, with that coming on the par-4, 340-yard 17th hole. On Sunday, Guthrie went out at 2-under-par. He immediately had a circle on the scorecard, rolling in a birdie at the par-4, 409-yard opening hole. Guthrie birdied No. 7 again and had two more birdies on the back nine, including No. 17 for the second straight day. He shared medalist honors with Baldwin Wallace University's Ryan Green and John Carroll's London Hoyser, who had the weekend's low round at 4-under-par 68.

Of note, Wooster has two active Scots who have been under par for a 36-hole tournament, as junior Krish Nayak did just that en route to earning medalist honors at last year's Gatorade Collegiate. Nayak's 71 on Sunday marked Wooster's other sub-par round of the weekend, and the red number marked a seven-stroke bounce back for Wooster's No. 1. Nayak turned at 3-under-par on Sunday and promptly went to 4-under-par with his fifth birdie of the round on No. 10. A sixth birdie came at the par-5, 495 yard 14th hole, which brought Nayak to a blistering 5-under-par. The junior finished at 149 for the weekend, which was tied for 16th-place.

Senior Jacob Ullom, Cammarata, and sophomore Mark Towns rounded out Wooster's "A" lineup. Ullom tied for 13th-place with consecutive 74s, while Cammarata debuted with a top-20 showing after a 73 and 77. Towns' 76 and 75 placed him in a tie for 23rd-place.

Senior Tyler Hilbert and first-year Andrew Carey led Wooster's "B" team with top-seven placements. Hilbert's 72s placed him in a tie for fourth-place at even-par, while Carey's seventh-place effort included an even-par 72 on Sunday. Hilbert drained nine birdies on the weekend, with the final two coming on Nos. 16 and 17 on Sunday. That brought the senior back to even-par for the day. He turned at 1-under-par in both rounds. Carey's two late birdies brought his Sunday score back to even-par, as he came in at 2-under-par over the final five holes. The first-year made the turn at 3-under-par on Saturday.

Wooster's depth was on full display, with all 15 Scots playing in the Gatorade Collegiate. Wooster's "C" team posted a 295 on Sunday, which marked the third-lowest team score on the day. Junior Noah Jackman led that quintet with a 72, while seniors Connor Mitchell and Eddie Papp had 74s, and first-year Parth Kirloskar carded a 75.

Next, Wooster is at the Westfield Invitational, which takes place September 18-19 at Westfield Country Club in Westfield Center, Ohio.
