Senior Salute: Tyler Hilbert

Tyler Hilbert Q&A Throughout the spring semester, we are honoring our senior student-athletes with a "Senior Salute" series. Today's featured senior is Tyler Hilbert, a business economics major from Plain City, Ohio. Hilbert is a member of the men's golf team.

Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: I chose to attend Wooster because the College felt like home. Coach Rich Danch is very personable as I found out on my visit, and Wooster's golf facilities and spring break trip are second to none as Div. III colleges go. Wooster seemed like a place I could really grow athletically and academically.

Q: What does being a Fighting Scot student-athlete mean to you?
A: Being a Fighting Scot student-athlete means being a high achiever who is willing to push themselves in every aspect. Combining athletics with an already rigorous academic schedule leads student-athletes to be focused and committed to their goals.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: The golf team trips down south and to Ireland are easily the best memories I have had at Wooster. Playing golf in four different southern states and throughout Ireland were unreal experiences. Exploring Galway and Dublin, Ireland, and creating so many memories there, were things I will never forget.

Q: What is the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: The best part is being able to surround myself with people from different teams that have similar athletic passion and goals.

Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: I am one of my team's Student Athlete Advisory Committee representatives and have played in multiple seasons of intramural basketball. I have taken part in Wooster Christian Fellowship as well as Jenny Investment Club, which manages a small portfolio of the College's endowment. I run the athletes' bible study on campus this year.

Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: While many people have had a profound impact on me, Coach Rich Danch has had the greatest impact on me. He has always been supportive both on and off the golf course and has believed in my golfing ability when I have not necessarily believed in it myself. This has allowed me to grow as both a person and athlete.

Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people and resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: Dr. Amyaz Moledina has been an amazing Independent Study advisor to me. Dr. Moledina has helped me both in problems in my research and in life and has pushed me not only in my study, but to stay on top of looking at what is next after Wooster.

Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: For my Independent Study, I am researching how the performance of a collectible compares with the performance of equity and bond indexes during recessions. Specifically, I am focusing on an investment in sports cards. If these collectibles have similar return and have limited positive correlation to standard markets, then they could be considered a formidable asset to take away an individual's financial risk from recessions.

Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: In the business consulting course, my team and I worked as business consultants for Common Owner, a small real estate crowdfunding firm. We conducted market research and worked with various datasets to provide insight on whether the company should enter a new market.

Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what advice would you give your first-year self?
A: The advice I would give my first-year self is to talk and meet as many people as possible. Introduce yourself to anybody you come in contact with, build as many connections you can, and say yes when friends ask if you want to go do something.
